Overview
Critical Care Medicine (CCM) is a medical specialty dedicated to the management of patients with life-threatening and often complex medical or surgical conditions in specialized Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
The CCM physician, or Intensivist, is trained to handle multi-organ dysfunction involving cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic, hepatic, renal, or gastrointestinal systems.
The Institute of Critical Care Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is one of the largest and most advanced critical care setups in India’s private healthcare sector, with 80 dedicated ICU beds, including 12 in the Executive Block. The department provides round-the-clock critical care and resuscitation support to High Dependency Units (HDUs), ward patients, and the Emergency Department.
Each ICU bed is equipped with advanced monitoring systems, ventilators (including high-frequency oscillatory ventilators), nitric oxide delivery systems, CRRT and hemodialysis machines, ECMO and MARS systems, as well as bedside ultrasonography, echocardiography, and bronchoscopy.
Our Mission
To foster excellence in clinical care, education, and research in Critical Care Medicine through structured academic programs, innovative learning tools, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
This website serves as a resource for medical professionals, fellows, and students who wish to explore the Institute’s academic programs, training opportunities, and contributions to critical care advancement in India.

Academic & Training Activities
The Institute conducts extensive educational programs for its own trainees and for residents rotating from other departments.
Training includes:
- Lectures, symposiums, and journal clubs
- Case discussions, mortality reviews, and audit meetings
- Adverse event analysis and quality improvement reviews
- Equipment handling and bedside teaching
Doctors in training receive hands-on instruction in:
- Difficult airway management
- Mechanical ventilation and weaning protocols
- Noninvasive ventilatory support
- Central venous and arterial cannulation
Procedures such as intubation and line placement are first taught on simulators and mannequins, ensuring safety and confidence before bedside practice.
The Institute also uses a computer-based simulator for arrhythmia recognition and management, with a consistent emphasis on the principle of “Do No Harm.”
Trainees are encouraged to develop strong diagnostic reasoning, interpret complex data, and understand the principles of noninvasive monitoring and hemodynamic support.
Structured Academic Programs
DrNB in Critical Care Medicine
The Institute offers a three-year DrNB program with eight seats annually.
Trainees undergo structured rotations across all ICUs and allied specialties including Pulmonology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Nephrology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Paediatrics.
The program emphasizes a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to patient care.
ISCCM Fellowship Programs
Under the aegis of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), the Institute conducts:
- Indian Diploma in Critical Care (IDCC) – 4 seats biannually
- Indian Fellowship in Critical Care (IFCC) – 4 seats annually
Both programs are designed to provide comprehensive exposure to critical care concepts and bedside application.
For details, visit: www.isccm.org
Fellowship in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO)
The Institute also offers a Fellowship in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) under the ECMO Society of India, reinforcing its leadership in advanced organ support technologies.
Neurocritical Care Fellowship
A one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) under the Neurocritical Care Society of India (NCSI), designed to train physicians in managing acute neurological emergencies. The program focuses on specialised, protocol-driven care for patients with life-threatening neurological conditions. The Institute offers a one-year program with advanced Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neurocritical Care facilities, equipped with ventilators, monitoring systems, and neurointerventional support.
Life Support Training (AHA-Certified)
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s Critical Care Department is an Independent International Training Center (ITC) of the American Heart Association (AHA) for Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
To date, over 1,000 healthcare professionals have been trained in BLS and ACLS under certified instructors.
The department has successfully conducted 44 ACLS provider courses, both within the hospital and at external centers.
All AHA training is conducted on a cost-only basis, ensuring affordability and adherence to the highest international standards.
Critical Care Nursing Training
The Critical Care Nursing Program is a six-month modular course that includes:
- Monthly contact sessions with lectures and hands-on workshops
- Skill-station practice and simulator-based learning
- Assignments and projects between modules
- Final assessment with written and practical evaluation
Two merit awards are presented to the best-performing nurses at the end of each course cycle.
The program benefits nurses from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as well as from external hospitals across Delhi and NCR.
